Maximising Your Space: Designing A Home Gym For Small Spaces

Looking to create a gym at home but not sure you have the room? In this article, Will Broome from GymEquipment.co.uk shares his tips for creating the perfect home gym in a small space.

Maximising Space: Designing A Home Gym For Small Spaces

Whether in a spare room, garage, or simply an unused corner of your home, creating a gym in what can be a limited space is a rewarding challenge. But with so much equipment to fit in and areas for different types of workouts to consider, it can be tricky to know where to start.

Here, we’ll guide you through the essentials of designing a home gym tailored to small spaces. From choosing the right equipment to the best exercises for compact places, the tips below will ensure your home workout space is both functional and inspiring.

Gym layout

Start by identifying the central workout zone. This area should be free of obstacles and provide enough space for stretching and dynamic exercises like jumping jacks, burpees, or yoga. Keep a clear perimeter around this zone to avoid any restrictions during movement. You can utilise modular storage options to keep your equipment organized and easily accessible while keeping clutter to a minimum.

Then, designate a dedicated corner for functional training, optimising space for dynamic workouts. Install a wall-mounted pull-up bar, suspension trainer, or resistance band anchor points, creating a versatile area for bodyweight exercises and flexibility training. This specialised zone maximizes the utility of your small gym, promoting a comprehensive fitness routine within a confined space.

Equipment

When space is at a premium, selecting the right fitness equipment is crucial. Consider your fitness goals, preferences, and available space before you start buying exercise machines and tools. Look for slim or compact alternatives to your favourite machines, or lightweight models that can be easily picked up and moved if you need to put them away afterwards. Compact cardio options like foldable treadmills or space-saving elliptical trainers are excellent choices for those with limited room.

To get the most out of the equipment you buy, opt for versatile pieces that can accommodate multiple exercises such as resistance bands, ublisjh adjustable dumbbells, and stability balls. This will allow you to consolidate your fitness equipment into a few key pieces without impacting your routine.

Storage

The best way to make the most of the room you have is to ensure your exercise equipment can be properly stowed away. Invest in foldable equipment that can be easily compacted when not in use. Foldable benches and collapsible workout stations are perfect for maximizing space efficiency, while shelving, storage cubes, or even under-bed storage containers can help maintain a clutter-free environment.

Consider vertical storage for weights and dumbbells to save floor space, too — wall-mounted racks and shelves can keep your weights neatly organized and within arm’s reach. Just ensure these have the proper brackets and support to avoid any collapses or damage to your property, and only use products from fitness brands and manufacturers you trust.

Design

As a final touch, placing mirrors on one or more walls can create an illusion of space and help you monitor your form during exercises. Mirrors also reflect natural light, making the gym feel more open and inviting, and painting the walls a light or bright colour can help make the room look bigger too. Other space-saving design features include using blinds instead of curtains, as well as spotlights.

You can also choose space-saving flooring options like interlocking foam tiles or roll-out mats. These not only protect your flooring from scuffs, scrapes, and falling equipment, but they can also create a designated workout area that can be easily rolled up or stored away if needed.

Workouts

Now that you’ve optimized your small home gym, let’s explore some effective home workouts that require minimal space. The first is a bodyweight circuit, consisting of squats, push-ups, lunges, and planks. This full-body workout requires minimal equipment and can be easily modified to match your fitness level.

High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) is another time-efficient and effective option. Combine short bursts of intense exercises like jumping jacks, burpees, and mountain climbers with brief rest periods in between. These workouts can be adapted to suit any fitness level. Or, embrace the mind-body connection with yoga or Pilates routines. These low-impact exercises improve flexibility, balance, and core strength, making them perfect for small spaces.

Below are some additional space-saving workouts that you can easily perform in a small home gym. Incorporating these into your routine adds variety and efficiency, ensuring a well-rounded fitness experience without the need for extensive equipment or lots of space.

  1. Jump Rope Cardio: Jumping rope is an excellent cardiovascular exercise that requires minimal space. It’s an effective way to get your heart rate up, burn calories, and improve coordination.
  2. Chair Workouts: Utilize a sturdy chair for various exercises, such as step-ups, tricep dips, and seated leg lifts. Chairs are versatile and can be used for both strength and cardio exercises.
  3. Wall Sits: Strengthen your legs and core with wall sits. Simply find an open wall space, lower yourself into a seated position with your back against the wall, and hold the position for as long as you can.
  4. Plank Variations: Planks are fantastic for core strength. Try different plank variations, including side planks, plank jacks, and mountain climbers, to engage various muscle groups.
  5. Bodyweight Rows: Use a sturdy horizontal bar at waist height for bodyweight rows. This exercise targets your back and arms and can be easily modified to match your fitness level.
  6. Resistance Band Exercises: Expand your workout routine with resistance bands. These versatile tools can be used for a variety of exercises, including bicep curls, lateral raises, and leg extensions, providing resistance without taking up much space.
  7. Pilates Ball Workouts: Incorporate a Pilates or stability ball for core exercises. Sit-ups, bridges, and leg lifts on the ball engage your stabilizing muscles, offering a challenging yet space-efficient workout.
  8. Kettlebell Swings: Kettlebell swings are a dynamic full-body exercise that can be performed with just one kettlebell. They enhance strength, endurance, and flexibility in a limited space.
  9. Shadow Boxing: Engage in shadow boxing for a great cardiovascular workout that also enhances coordination and agility. All you need is enough space to move around comfortably.
  10. Resistance Band Pull-Aparts: Stand in an upright position and use a resistance band for pull-aparts. This simple exercise targets the shoulders and upper back, helping improve posture.

Designing a home gym in a limited space requires thoughtful planning and strategic choices. By selecting versatile equipment, embracing compact designs, and incorporating space-saving solutions, you can create a functional and inspiring workout space that fits seamlessly into your lifestyle.
