If you live alone and want to join Super Solos, you will need to answer three membership questions and wait for approval before posting and taking part in our Book Club. How it works

1 This page gives Super Solos the chance to preview shortlisted books before deciding what book will be their preferred choice.

2 To find out more about each book, below you can read what Book Club Leader, Jessica Bowman has to say about the theme and the shortlisted title’s launching our club in April and May. You can also take a look at the Amazon description and/or the Goodreads reviews. * Please do not purchase a book until Step 4 is completed.

3 To express your preferred choice, please enter your choice in the Book Club poll written by Jessica Bowman in our Super Solos Group Page. The poll post can be found in The Announcements Section.

4 Jessica will review the poll, confirm the final book choice and will repost a link to this page, so you can purchase the book.

5 The date for April’s Book Club discussion will be confirmed via a post to the Group Page.

6 Information about May’s Book Club will be published soon.

Solo Living will be grateful for a little support if you can purchase the Kindle version via the links below. If you decide to buy via one of the links below, Solo Living will receive a small commission.

Theme and Shortlisted Books – Jessica Bowman

The Solo Living Book Club choices for April and May are based on the theme of Solitude. Over the next two months, we will be looking at fiction (April) and non-fiction (May) titles exploring what it means to be alone – whether this be emotionally, physically or both.

The fiction choices for April explore the theme of solitude in very different ways. The first choice, ‘I Am Legend’ seems particularly relevant today as it focuses on the story of a single survivor of a plague. Although he endures isolation and loneliness there are factors urging him to survive.

The second book choice, ‘Perfume’ approaches the theme of solitude in a completely different way. Although the lead character in this novel is surrounded by people he feels extremely alienated from the rest of humanity. This book looks at what it means to be human, how we develop when our humanity is questioned and how a sense of separation from the rest of the human race can affect an individual’s psyche.

Finally, ‘My Year of Rest and Relaxation’ explores self-imposed solitude. In this novel, we will explore questions around mental health and inner peace and how we go about achieving this in our modern world. Does withdrawing from the world and all of its trials help or hinder our wellbeing? What does it mean to look for a life away from the mainstream?
