If you are familiar will the old saying, “fixing the roof while the sun is shining”, then it may be a timely reminder to say that some of those jobs around the house you’ve been putting off are best tackled when conditions are most favourable.  When the sun eventually puts his hat on, it’s the perfect time to give your home some love by performing a few DIY maintenance tasks…

Repair your roof

Over the winter months, your roof may have taken a real pounding from winter storms. High winds, snow, and driving rain, can all cause damage to roof tiles. Carry out a roof inspection at the beginning of summer to check for any damaged or missing tiles and if you can, do the repairs as it could also prove to be a better time to find a roofer.

Give the place a lick of paint

Summer is a great time to give your home a lick of paint. The higher temperatures mean that paint will dry quickly and if you’re painting the exterior of your home, you’ll have a better chance of avoiding rain. Applying a new coat of paint to a surface will help to protect it from damage.

Clean out the gutters

Over the winter months winter storms and gales may have caused all kinds of dirt and debris to have collected in the guttering on your home. This crud can lead to water overflowing from the gutters, which could then cause structural damage to your roof. Inspect and clean your gutters to keep them in good working order and once again in the autumn, after leaves have fallen and before the winter weather begins to kick in.

Fix the fences

If you don’t carry out summer maintenance on the fences on your property, they will begin to deteriorate. If a fence has suffered winter storm damage, you should replace any damaged fence panels. You should then check that the base of the fence is free of weeds and rocks, as these items can cause moisture to collect on the fence surface causing it to rot. Again, a  power washer can prove useful to clean any grime from the fence.
